What if tomorrow’s best board member isn’t a person at all – or if an algorithm could choose better human directors than we do? Corporate governance may soon see “fused boards” where AI systems join or assist human directors, and even shake up how those directors are chosen.
One emerging idea is to deploy multiple AI modules, each handling a specific board function (finance, compliance, risk, etc.), and then integrate them into a collective AI-augmented board. These fused boards combine diverse expert systems so that, together, they emulate or support the decision-making of a traditional board. Rather than a single AI replacing the board, it’s a team of AIs collaborating and cross-checking – a concept companies are actively exploring.
At the same time, researchers are finding that algorithms might outperform traditional processes in selecting human directors. A 2021 study by academics from Ohio State, Colorado, and Washington showed how machine learning can identify board candidates and how the AI-chosen directors differ from those picked under the status quo. The implication? An unbiased algorithm might spot talent or diversity that a typical nomination committee overlooks, potentially leading to stronger governance.
It’s early days for these approaches, but the direction is clear. As AI tools get more sophisticated, boards could become a hybrid of human wisdom and machine intelligence – each complementing the other. Forward-thinking companies are already experimenting to see if AI can eliminate blind spots in board composition and decision-making.
